Get Real About Business Card Design

Article Word Count: 688 [View Summary] Comments (0)

Ever picked up a copy of one of those "Best of Business Card Design" books? The ones filled with glossy photos of business cards made of "special materials" using "innovative printing techniques"? While I admit it can be fun - and occasionally instructive - to peruse these award-winning business card designs, I think these books often confuse more business owners than they help.

How?

By fostering the notion that a business card has to be radically different, trendy and expensive to be effective.

It's time to get real!

"Cool" doesn't sell your product. "Trendy" doesn't pay the bills. And "Wow, what a great card!" is flattering, but hardly an income guarantee. Ever seen one of those expensive Super Bowl TV ads, where afterwards you can remember the commercial but haven’t the foggiest idea what product it was promoting?

Same principle. A business card can be a masterpiece of graphic design and do you absolutely no good as far as convincing someone you just met to give you a call, visit your website or drop by your store.

The truth is that a fairly ordinary business card can be an extraordinary marketing tool, if used wisely.

Now don't get me wrong - I am not advocating the use of a generic, black-text-on-white-stock, flimsy card ordered from the local quick printer, or an attractive but ad-supported "free" business card ordered online. And splurging on a custom designed business card is definitely appropriate in certain industries and certain business situations.

What I'm saying is that an attractive, legible, customer-focused business card is good enough for most people in most circumstances. Even if it’s designed on a website that offers business card templates which can be used by an unlimited number of other business owners. Even if the graphics or clipart aren’t original.

Frankly, it’s more important to get a decent card circulating than it is to let customers slip by while you’re endlessly tweaking the “perfect” business card.

So what is “good enough”?

Your business card should be attractive. It should look professional, be of standard size and weight, use color well, catch the eye, and be different enough from your competitors to make your card stand out but not so different that you seem out of touch.

Your business card should be legible. No tiny text. No crazy mish-mash of fonts. No crossed-out phone numbers or dingy food stains. Each word should be there for a reason, carefully chosen to given recipients a reason to remember you and encourage them to use your product or service.

This means that business cards should also be customer-focused. Though a business card contains your company name and contact information, its purpose is less about you than it is about showing your prospective customer that you understand their needs and that your company can meet them.

A business card design that is “good enough” may look little different than those used by others in similar professions. But if it goes beyond the typical business card to include information that reassures or informs prospects (such as testimonials, store hours, special services or solutions to common problems), it will certainly out-perform a fancier but less customer-centered card.

And let’s also “get real” about what a business card is, and what it can do. Yes, it’s a powerful marketing weapon. But c’mon, it’s a 2.5” by 3.25” bit of paper. No piece of paper, no matter how innovative or elegant, can override a prospects’ instinctive distaste of a salesperson who’s arrogant, uncaring, or completely clueless. You may find that people love your card and that you just can’t seem to keep enough of them in your wallet – but if you never hear from the people you give them to, there’s something wrong.

After all, there are plenty of superstar performers using bland, impersonal company-generated business cards with outstanding results.

In the hands of a personable and articulate company representative who really listens to what a prospective client wants, a “good enough” business card will outperform a graphic designer’s dream card every time.

How to Build an Empire With Business Cards

Article Word Count: 868 [View Summary] Comments (0)

Most business owners don’t realize the importance of using a simple business card to generate tons of customers. It simply does not matter what kind of business you are in, you have to utilize this primitive business technique in order to grow your business fast.

The three main mistakes people make when marketing with business cards are:

1. Not having a business card.

2. Being stingy and only giving out one card per person.

3. Not giving a card to every person they come into contact with.

Not having thousands of business cards at your disposal at all times is not only stupid it is a crime against your business. If an employee of yours stole as much money from you as you lose from not utilizing business cards, they would go to prison for a long time. With today’s super low cost business card printing prices there is no reason not to have business cards and an abundance of them for that matter.

I started my professional concrete cutting service business with absolutely no capital and grossed almost $400,000 in my first eight months of business. My only means of advertising was business cards. As many of you already know, it can sometimes take up to an entire year to get your ad placed into your local yellow page directory and it can be quite costly to a new business. The following are techniques that I used to generate tons of business from business cards and I believe that these same techniques can benefit any type of business.

1. I started with an eye catching logo and had a design that really said “this guy is a pro.” It is worth the modest initial investment to get your cards designed right.

2. I kept my message “short and sweet.” I have seen way too many people over do it with tons of bulleted text that cause confusion with the reader. I do concrete cutting and a few other services that relate to it but my business cards say only “Concrete Cutting.”

3. I ordered my cards in quantities of 5000 at a time. Too often do I see new business owners print cards off of their computer and literally “ration” them off.

4. I never gave out a single card! I always handed out at least five at a time and sometimes more. I still look at my business cards as “lottery tickets.” The first job I get from the batch pays for all of them so the rest can pay off huge. If they get thrown in the trash – Who cares? There are thousands more where those came from.

5. Any time I would meet someone in the construction trades I would hand them a stack of cards. I hand them to people that are standing next to me in line at the Home Depot or that are pumping gas across from me at the fuel pumps. I get questions like “What are these for?” or “What do you want me to do with these?” and I just simply say “You may not need my services now but when you do, you’ll know who to call.” At the same time I am thinking “I don’t care what you do with them, they were basically free and the fact of the matter is that I get hundreds of calls from people that say “Remember Me?” “I met you at the Exxon Station or at parent teacher’s night.” Or “John Smith gave me your card and said I should call you” yet I have never heard of John Smith. Or “I’ve got your business card on my desk and I don’t know where it came from but I need your services.” I simply hand tons of my business cards out to people and the calls roll in.

6. I buy a mailing list of contractors from a list broker and I simply put three business cards in an envelope and mail a thousand envelopes at a time. I do not put an expensive brochure or a flyer, I simply put three business cards in and I get hundreds of calls and referrals from the mailing,

I now get hundreds and hundreds of calls from my existing customers and my yellow page ads but I still use business cards more than I ever have. I now have five trucks and seven employees and giving out business cards in the same fashion as I have described above is part of their job description. They have all seen the power of business cards and that business cards ensure each of our survival and actually gives them a good feeling knowing that they got a specific customer. If I contact a new customer and they happen to mention that one of my men did not give them a stack of business cards then I immediately contact the employee, ask them if it is true and explain to them that it is part of their job, then I hand them a big box of business cards and tell them not to let it happen again, ever.

Professional Business Cards - 4 Quality Issues That Make a Difference

Article Word Count: 477 [View Summary] Comments (0)

The quality of your professional business cards will be determined by the quality of the elements that create it. Here are four things you must have to end up with great business cards.

1. Paper: The first thing people notice when you hand them your business card is the thickness of the paper. If it's thin it will droop over, transmitting a negative message. The message your prospect senses will be along the lines of "Flimsy", "Weak", and "Cheap".

Flimsy, weak and cheap probably isn't something you want your prospects associating with you or your products. Give 'em something they could pry a door open with if they needed to. :)

This is how to remedy the flimsy business card problem. Demand that your professional business cards be printed on thick card stock. The thicker the better.

The printer I use prints on 15-point stock coated on both sides. By the time the aqueous coating is applied the card is about 16 points thick. Feels like a credit card.

Paper is the first place cheap printers skimp on. Buyer beware!

2. Coated or Uncoated Card stock: I recommend using coated card stock. The coating prevents the ink from being absorbed. The ink actually rides on the surface of the paper and better maintains its vibrant color.

If you go with uncoated stock the ink gets sucked into the paper and looks dull and lifeless. This is another negative message you don't want to send to your prospects.

Most printers provide you with a choice between coated and uncoated card stocks. You will usually only end up with uncoated if you are cutting cost corners. Don't do it if you are looking to produce truly professional business cards.

3. Ink: Should you go with a full-color business card or a single color business card? It really depends on your design. The difference in appearance between full-color business cards and single color business cards can be pretty dramatic.

Because the cost of printing business cards has come down so much over the past few years it makes sense to print in full-color to really brighten up the appearance of your cards. Single-color cards are considered old-school.

4. Registration: Registration is the alignment of one ink on top of the other. If the registration shifts, even slightly, your business card will look terrible.

For the most part printers are very careful about ink alignment.

The moment your receive your new business cards you should pull samples out from various areas of the box and check to see if your cards are printed correctly. If the inks are misaligned you need to contact your printer right away and request a reprinting.

In order to end up with professional business cards you need to work with professional quality elements. Demand nothing less than the best and you will end up with the best.

Why free business card design tips?

To make a point! Free offers attract Customers and keep their attention!

But how does that apply to business cards? Shouldn't cards give customers the contact information about your business!

Wrong! Business cards should give your customers a reason to remember and use your business, if not it will end up in the trash!

What would you rather have?

A card that tells customers how to reach you...

Or... one that seduce new customers and referrals to your business?

Free offers - Discounts - Yes, Coupons are still the most effective advertising tool ever designed and you probably already use them!

The best free design tips are a headline, an offer and an address, that's all you need!

No doubt you've seen those punch cards handed out by sandwich shops, ice cream parlors or the dry cleaners. In fact, you might even have one in your own wallet. These cards did the trick, they kept you coming back!

Most businesses never think that their cards could and should use the same technique! It works like magic! You'll see them in the car, on the refrigerator, at work on the desk, but not in the trash!

Think of your business cards as personal sales ads instead of information!

Simple phrases like "call now for _____", "with this card, buy one get one free or "this card is good for _____" can out-perform any standard business card and multiply the amount of business per dollar spent.

Most importantly, every time you hand out the card, verbally make the offer. Tell your prospects exactly why they should keep that card handy. If you're handing out cards to your targeted market you'll be amazed at the response you get.

Oh... dump that slogan and replace it with a headline. Promote a benefit that your company offers over the competition - maybe a guarantee, your superior selection, your promptness your hassle free techniques or your price match policy.

The Business Card Template

Kaye Marks
Level: Platinum

Article Word Count: 666 [View Summary] Comments (0)

Most businesspersons have color business cards printed twice or thrice a year. Depending on their type of business, they need to do this since market and larger economic forces may require you to update yourself and your image quickly to get new business contacts.

In this increasingly dynamic business environment, more and more people are investing in printing online to save time and money in producing and updating their color business cards. To help people in creating their own business card designs, some have introduced the use of business card templates.

Like other templates for printed materials, color business card templates offer a fast and easy way to change little aspects of design and update it for a new batch of printing. There are several reasons why you should try setting this up for your own designs as well.

Why use templates? - Business card templates offer you a chance to quickly rethink and redesign your image throughout the year. For example, there may be a sudden change in the business climate that changes the demographics of your clients and business contacts. From a general market of professionals, your market might change to a largely female professional audience, or maybe an older more "veteran" business crowd.

In these cases, using a template to quickly redesign and print will come in handy. Within a few days, you can retool your business strategy so that you engage more with the new demographics of your market. Templates basically give you the flexibility to change your image within days to quickly exploit any business opportunities that may arise.

How to acquire a template - So how do you setup a template? Well, it is very easy. If you have a professional designer or layout artist that designs your full color business cards, have them give you a raw working digital copy of the design. This means you need to ask for the design in its design format, such as a Photoshop document file (.pds), Adobe Illustrator file (.ai) or a Quark Express Document (.qxd) or something similar.

In some cases, the design format can be in an office document file format such as a Microsoft Word document file (.doc) or other kinds of office documents. Having the design format at hand, means that you already have a template that you can change at will (as long as you have the software to open it). Just open the raw design file and adjust it to your needs when the time for changing your designs is at hand. Avoid getting templates in image file formats like JPG, TIF and PNG since these file types will be harder to edit and cannot be used as a template easily.

When to use the template - Now, you may ask, what is the right time to update my designs and use a template? Well there are several guidelines in dealing with this. First, you must have a regular update for your design each year. This is not just because you may have run out on your supply. Updating your designs yearly means you can update your contact information, add any important messages, and of course, you can also switch for a more popular design if necessary. Your templates can easily help you in doing this yearly update.

Besides the yearly changes though, you must also use your templates to update your designs when a change in the market climate comes. As was stated above, having new business cards printed to exploit a business opportunity can be a good business strategy. So have your templates ready when this time comes as well.

In the end, you should realize that templates are good supplemental tools to help you manage your business card printing strategy. They give you the opportunity to react quickly to dynamic business environments and they also keep you and your business image new and fresh for business contacts. So use your templates wisely and regularly so that you can take advantage of its benefits.

Good Business Card Designs Need One More Important Thing to Draw Attention

Article Word Count: 335 [View Summary] Comments (0)

Most business cards are not used to their full potential. Business owners normally plaster their business name, personal name, address, phone number and email address on their cards so that clients and potential customers can contact them. Perhaps they may even take a little extra effort in choosing a pleasing shade, texture, and a fancy font for a more appealing presentation. Yet, good business card designs still lack power without good copywriting.

To improve on your copywriting with such a small space, you are going to have to get creative. Creating an effective tagline can perform miracles and work double duty to drawing more attention to your cards.

Here are three ideas to help you create a good tagline that will draw more attention...

1. Use some catchy, attention-grabbing words.

Your tagline should be fairly short (as space is an issue)...yet catchy enough to draw the attention your
customers. Browse some ads in the newspaper and watch the billboards to help spark some ideas.

2. Use rhymes or plays on words.

You can still sing words to most of your favorite commercials (most have rhyming words)...and the words
"you deserve a break today," "reach out and touch someone," and "just do it," do not even require you to hear the company's name...you immediately relate these slogans in your mind with the companies who inspired them.

3. Use action words and highlight the benefits of your services or products.

Strive to appeal to the needs of your customers. State something that makes your business stand out and unique from others in your niche.

As a final word, taglines can be a useful tool for branding your business, and business cards need not be boring. If you're still hurting for ideas, hold a contest and ask your customers to submit some slogan ideas. Take a vote for the favorite one and reward the winner with some great company prizes. You'll be the real winner, though, once you have a great card for your business!

3 Business Card Tips - Bonus

1. Studies have shown that the best (the most noticeable) place to put your logo on a business card is in the top-right hand corner. Reason for that is because the majority of people are right handed. They take out their wallet, hold it in there right hand, while they take out the cards with there left hand. The thumb is placed on top of the business card while the other fingers are placed at the back of the card, since you are using you're left hand to take out the card your thumb will be covering the top-left hand corner. While the top-right hand corner of the business card remains exposed for the person to see the logo.

2. Standing out is just $50 away! - To get 2000 cards printed out will cost you around $40-$50. To make them stand out will cost you around $100, how so? Well with those extra $50 you should add something that is not seen on average business cards. Adding UV, Gloss, or making the card look like a pencil, or with rounded edges, something that will stand out.

3. No more exchanging numbers through phone! - One of the spikes that I had to bring me business is I stopped exchanging phone numbers with people. Every time I came to the point where we had to exchange numbers I simply gave out my business card and told them to give me a call so I'll have there number. You'll be surprised how many times those business cards end up in hands of people who need graphic design service!

Also, did you ever wonder how much graphic designers get paid? How much does a website cost? Or the most common mistakes novice graphic designers make that you should stay away from?
