Business Card Tips

1.

Business Card Design It is very important designing your business cards in such a way that will make your services unique, captivating and memorable. You can have a good message on your business card that conveys what your business can do for people. But if you don’t make your business cards stand out your business cards are not going to be as effective as they could be.

USP - Before you start making your business cards you should know what your Unique Selling Proposition  is what set you apart from your competitors. Your should in some way convey your USP on your Business Cards.

Theme – The theme of your Business cards should match the image of your Business.  If you’re in the financial business your cards should have professional design. If your in a business that involves children such as daycare you might try using primary colors in your design.

Font – The font  should be an easy to read font. The font color should match your theme or logo. When in doubt I go with black or gray.

Font Size– Should be large enough that it is easy to read

Color – Try using 2-3 colors (plus white and black) Try to use the red as one of your colors in your business cards.  It may not always work with your card design or logo, but red does make your business cards stand out.

  • I like to put the company name , slogan or Catch phrase in red when it fits the theme of the card. If red doesn’t fit ,  you can use images,  pictures or clipart to make you business cards stand out.
  • Example: I was in a group for business networking called BNI. We would pass referrals and exchange business cards. Everyone would put some of their business cards in the card display. Then you would pick the ones you needed.  I would close my eyes,  then open them while standing in front of the display. The thing I noticed when I open my eyes was that the business cards that stood out were the ones that had the color red in an image or a picture of the cardholder.

Highlight Highlight -  Try highlighting a part of your text that you want to stand out. Not only will it make your text stand out it will make your business cards stand out.

Images,Pictures or Clip Art - Images and Pictures of the card holder should take up at least 25% of the card. Be careful with clipart. Make sure it is related to the business or it may send the wrong message.

  • Example:  I remember a gentleman handing me a business card for his roofing company. The business card had a clipart of a man fishing in a stream on it. The first thing I thought of was this man cares more about fishing than he does his business. How likely would you be to pick up the phone and call?

Use the Back of the business card - You are missing out if you are not using the back of your business cards

  • Put a call to action on the back.
  • Try to engage your clients by putting a coupon on the back.
  • Put a check list, quote or a testimonial on the back. Something to give your card value or improve your image. That way people will hold on to your card longer.
  • URP (unique referral proposition) - It’s just another way to have a call to action on your business cards.

Have A Call To Action - You have to let people know what you want. A call to action is proven to increase ad response. Here are couple of examples.
  • Present this card and _________. (get 10% off your next oil change)
  • Visit our website to _________. (watch our injury law video)
  • URP - Put this on the back of the card.
Example: "Our business is 100% referral-based. If you're happy with our service, please give your friend, neighbor or co-worker this card!"

 2.

Copywriting What is copywriting? The simplest way to put it is that copywriting is selling with words. You can have a card that stands out but if it doesn’t say the right thing you may be losing customers.

Grab Their Attention With Your Catch Phrase - Strive to find a catch phase slogan, rhyme or jingle that grabs their attention and tells them of the benefits to them. This may be a good time to think about your USP.

  • Don’t bore your customers and clients with telling them about how great you and  your business are. People don’t care about how great you are. They want to know what you can do for them. So think about that when you are making your catch phase slogans, rhymes or jingles.
  • You don’t want it to be very long as there is not very much room on a business card.

Use Attention Grabbing Words - Chose your words carefully.

  • Ted Nichols who is known in the copywriting  world as one of the best put this on his business cards: “I help people turn words into money
